If you had a doubt again, the price isn’t synonym of excellence, or not enough to qualify a wine among others. The proof with a stunning blind wind tasting of Bordeaux’s wines…
The event takes place in the hotel Laurent (Paris), the 29 of june 2009. A blind wine tasting of 11 Bordeaux’s wines 2001 is organised by François MAUSS (above). Creator of the Grand Jury Européen in 1996, his aim is to highlight a collective point of view about wines to avoid the influence too important sometimes of a solitary critic, who can make a mistake, with unpleasants consequences for the producer. Then, he dares to compare some unknown “châteaux” with the famous of their AOC, to estimate the reputation standards…without knowing the label. And he gathers some international tasters with different jobs to express various leanings. For this tasting, 15 tasters are gathered, from many environments with various nationalities. For example, Michel BETTANE, a french critic and journalist, Orazio VAGNOZZI, italian worker from KPMG or the american statistician Kevin SHIN. When the bailiff has checked that the vintage on the cork and the label are the same and the temperature of the wines, the tasting can start. Each taster takes notes, which are collected by the bailiff, who makes a ranking with the differents scores. And then François MAUSS asks the opinion of the tasters about all the wines, before to reveal thier identities. It’s the beginning of the surprises !!! The 3 first wines are among 4 of the less expensives, but the second cost only 14,90€, from the Château de Reignac ! This vineyard from the AOC Bordeaux is located at Saint-Loubès (Gironde) win unanimous support with its fruit and youth. While the costly Château Pétrus (1521€) is ranked in the last third (8th position). Then, finally, wines are worth them prices ? I already gave an element of answer here…and will write a next article about the myth Pétrus. But waiting, if you want to see the full tasting, it’s below !
